Split both numbers into tens and ones and you get four pieces: 600 + 210 + 80 + 28 — add them up and you get 918, exactly the product. Seen as area, it is obvious how large the tens-by-tens piece is. 📝 Long multiplication just bundles those four pieces into two lines.
