Count the Beats
Music is a game of dividing time. ⚖️ First, balance the notes: how many quarter notes equal one whole note? Then use only eighth notes to match a half note—and hear “long” and “short” as each note plays its length. 🥁 Next, fill a measure. 4/4 means “four quarter notes in one measure.” Notes that don’t fit stay out, and empty space remains if it’s not full. Fill it just right and tap “Listen” to hear the first beat ring louder. ⏱️ Last comes tempo. At 60 beats per minute, one beat is exactly 1 second; at 120, it takes half as long. Make a Melody
Connect notes to make a song! 🎼 Place one note in each of the eight spaces. As the dots rise, the sounds rise too, so you can see the melody’s shape. Try making a melody that goes up, one that goes down, and a mountain-shaped melody that rises and falls. 🔁 Next, repetition. Create the first four spaces, then repeat them exactly, one note higher, or upside down — songs we know are made this way, with repetition and little changes. 🏁 Last, the ending note. Sounds That Get Along
Why do some two sounds fit together so well? 🤝 Layer another sound over Do. Reduce the vibration counts to the simplest ratio and the answer appears—simple ratios like 1:2, 2:3, and 3:4 sound smooth, while a complex one like 8:15 feels rough. 🎶 Now stack three sounds to make a chord. Do–Mi–Sol vibrate in the neat ratio 4 : 5 : 6—it’s no accident! 😖 Finally, try two very close sounds. When 264 and 266 ring together, they wobble twice per second. High and Low Sounds
What makes a sound high or low? 🎹 Press the keys and watch waves appear below. The higher the sound, the closer together the waves are—because they vibrate more times each second. ✖️ Now choose two sounds and layer them. When one vibrates exactly twice as fast, they become the «same-named note»—an octave apart. Four times as fast makes two octaves! 📏 Finally, strings.
