The Mean Trap
⚖️ The mean is the «evenly shared amount», while the median is the value «right in the middle» when you line things up. Move seven friends’ allowances around and make the mean 6 or 4. You can even keep the mean at 5 while changing only the median! Two sets can have the same mean but feel very different inside. 🎈 The second tab is especially fun: keep six allowances the same and raise just one to 100. The mean jumps from 5 to 18, but the median stays at 5 because the middle person hasn’t changed. 🎯 Last, choose: a class where only one student gets a huge allowance, evenly spread test scores, or home prices with just a few expensive ones—which data should we describe with the mean, and which with the median? Who Did We Ask?
🎤 Ask twenty soccer players, “What’s your favorite sport at school?” and soccer comes first. Ask the basketball team, and basketball wins. Ask the library club, and running wins. Ask twenty students chosen evenly from the whole school, and swimming comes first. The question and number of people are the same, but the winner changes every time! ⚖️ In the second tab, make your own samples. Add or remove five students from each group to make soccer, basketball, swimming, and running come first in turn. You can make all four sports win—just by changing who you choose. 🎯 Last, decide: Which survey can you trust—the one asking only soccer players, twenty evenly chosen students, or just two evenly chosen students? They Rise Together
📈 In months when more ice cream was sold, there were also more swimming accidents. The two graphs stay perfectly together all year — never out of step. Does that mean ice cream causes accidents? ☀️ Check it yourself in the second tab. Raise the temperature and both increase. But set a cold day and sell «30 more» ice creams: the accident count doesn’t budge! Ice cream wasn’t the cause. The dotted “temperature” line on the left made both move together. 🎯 Last: decide what’s what. Study time and test scores, foot size and reading ability, village-name length and rainy days — which is a real cause, a hidden reason, or just a coincidence? When You Cut the Y-Axis
🔪 Four groups collected 48, 50, 52, and 54 stickers—almost the same, right? But if the vertical axis starts at 47, first place can look «7 times» last place! The numbers haven’t changed at all. Change the axis starting value and see for yourself how the big number in the middle can puff up from 1.1× to 7×. ✂️ Next, cut the time period. There was hardly any change over twelve months, but showing only March to June makes a graph that «shoots up». Show only June to September, and it «drops sharply» instead. Same data!
