Drawing Things Smaller
How much smaller is a map than the real land? 📐 Try drawing a 100 m playground on 10 cm of paper. Shrink it 1,000 times and it fits exactly—but shrink it only 500 times and it spills off the page! The larger the land, the more you need to shrink it. 📏 Now measure 3 cm on a map. If the scale is 1:1,000, how many meters is that in real life? 🔍 Finally, change only the scale on the same paper. Shrink a little and barely a desk fits; shrink a lot and a whole city fits. How can you see more detail? This app was made with code too · Remix it to measure the distance from your home to school!
Flattening the Round
What happens when we transfer our spherical Earth onto flat paper? 🍊 An orange peel can’t lie flat without tearing—and Earth is the same. If we force it flat, some places stretch. Choose a latitude: the Equator stays the same, but around 80°, the width stretches nearly sixfold! ⚖️ That’s why Greenland looks so huge. Compare true area (green) with map size (orange): of the four lands, the one that’s truly smallest looks second-largest on the map. 🧭 Finally, tap the three maps. Preserve area and shape gets distorted; preserve shape and area gets distorted. Can you find a map that preserves all three? This app was made with code too · Remix it and compare our country’s size!
